Phishing is a term for when a scammer tries to collect personal information from you. They’ll try anything to get your info, including posing as a legitimate business through email, phone, text, or social media. One common method is to ask you to enter information into a fake website that looks and feels just like the real one. Scammers have become increasingly sophisticated and convincing, so remember never to share information unless you’re sure of who you’re sharing with. Chances are that a business you work with already has your information on file.
CURRENT SCAM ALERTS:
There is a wide variety of phone scams currently circulating, including false claims that you owe the IRS money, that you owe your utility company or bank, that your friend or family member needs bail money, or attempts to get you to say something such as the recent “Can You Hear Me Scam”.
If you receive a phone call that is suspicious in any way, it is recommended that you hang up and call the company back at the number you have saved or have found on their verified website.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
- Beware of calls or e-mails that contain urgent requests for personal information.
- Beware of e-mails that are not personalized with your name.
- Don’t click on links in an email message to get to any website. Call the company to verify or enter the website manually in your browser. The link could say the correct information, but it directs you to a bogus site.
- If you are submitting credit card information, make sure you are on a secure website. The beginning of the Web address will be https:// not just http://.
- Consider installing scam blocking protection on your browser. This can usually be done through your internet provider.
- Be cautious of any emails you receive with links to our website. Check that the link leads you to the correct web address, www.GreatBasin.org/. If you’re not sure about it, please call us before entering any information.
- Forward suspect phishing emails to email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Never disclose credit card, bank or personal information to someone you do not know or are unsure of.
HOW WE PROTECT YOU
- Great Basin FCU will never email or call to ask for your personal information such as your social security number, credit/debit card number, birth dates, mother’s maiden name, etc.
- Emails from Great Basin are clearly marked as such and will include only links to secure sites.
