Senior Meal Sites in Washoe County

Donate meals to the elderly this holiday season.

The Holidays always make me wonder who has less; who is alone; who is in need? Often, we think about children during this time of year and whether the magic of giving is reaching them. We don’t typically think about our elderly citizens and how they are managing.

Did you know that nearly 5 million senior citizens currently face hunger in our country? That means 63% of households with adults older than 50 find themselves making an impossible choice; do you buy groceries, or do you pay for medical care?

Having access to good nutritious food should be a fundamental human right and it should be affordable for those in need. What would you do if you found yourself at the end of the day facing the dilemma of bills, medications, food and financial survival? What would you choose and what would you sacrifice?

Luckily, here in Washoe County we are looking towards our senior community and we are asking these important questions. Have you ever heard of senior meal sites? Throughout Washoe County we have a series of senior meal sites. This means nutritious meals available to the general public who may not otherwise be able to afford it. Seniors 60 and older can have a well-balanced meal with a suggested donation of $2, and if you are under 60 a $4 donation is required.

These services are provided to our community thanks to the Washoe County Human Services Agency Senior Services Division, Regional Parks and Open Space, and the Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. You can go to any of the meal site locations from 10 AM to 2 PM to get a meal but need to reserve your meal by 9 AM on the day the meal is served. Besides food, this also gives seniors a chance to socialize, play card and board games and on select days view live entertainment.

For a list of meal site locations, including the brand-new Spanish Springs location can be found here.
